Ebike battery repair is not as difficult as one might think. In fact, with a little guidance, most people can do it themselves. In this blog post, we will walk you through the steps necessary to repairing your ebike battery. We will also provide some tips that will help make the process go a little smoother. So, whether you are a beginner or an experienced ebike battery repairman, this blog post has something for everyone!
Next, it is important to determine what the problem is before attempting any repairs. Repairing an e-bike battery may seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. With the right tools and some knowledge, you can easily repair your e-bike battery. Here are some tips for successfully repairing your e-bike battery:
1) Check your ebike or motor controller
Ruling out your ebike and motor controller problems, maybe without repairing the ebike battery, your ebike battery is good!
We first check if the ebike battery power indicator light is on properly and if you can charge your ebike battery. If everything is fine with the ebike battery, then the problem may be with your motor controller! Or even worst your ebike is damaged, which is the last condition one would expect.
First we make sure that the ebike motor controller is properly connected to the ebike battery discharge cable, after confirming this we then disassemble the controller to check if the internal wiring is old or the wiring is disconnected, which can also cause the battery to fail to provide power to the ebike.
If everything is normal in the controller wiring, then there is a high probability that the controller itself has a problem, the controller is a precision part inside, once there is damage, then you can only buy a new controller to replace it, so you can repair your ebike and battery, so that they are properly connected to work again.
2) Check if the charger can charge your ebike battery
If your ebike battery does not work anymore, we try to repair your ebike battery with the charger. ebike battery in the state of charge, whether your charger shows a green light or has a fully charged sign.
If so, try charging your ebike battery again with a new charger. Don’t have another charger? No problem, you can use a voltage measurement tool to measure if there is voltage at the charger output port. If you still can’t charge with a new charger or there is voltage at the charger output port, then we will rule out the charger problem.
If you have voltage at the charger output and the charger shows a red light or a charging sign, and the battery is still not working after a few hours of charging, please check the following other suggestions for repairing your ebike battery.
3) Checking ebike battery storage conditions
Most people make the mistake of not using your ebike for a long period of time, which will result in the ebike battery being in a static state for a long time. ebike battery pack internal parts will lose battery power, although very little power is lost every day, but a long period of time in a non-working state will result in the battery’s power being completely lost.
ebike battery power loss will let the battery slowly die, can not be charged, can not work. It only takes two to three months for your ebike battery to die completely and there is no way to repair your ebike battery. ebike battery in the winter, this death rate will be faster, it only takes a month or two.
Long periods of non-use ebike battery will need to keep the battery charged, it is best to charge the battery every two to three months when it is fully charged, this is also the best way to repair your ebike battery before it is completely dead.
4) Check ebike battery discharge port voltage and power switch
We first use the voltage detection tool to measure the battery discharge port voltage whether there is voltage, just in case we also need to check whether the ebike battery cable terminals have voltage. If the ebike battery discharge cable terminal does not have voltage and the battery discharge port voltage, then it may be the base welding line is loose, or cable problems, we just need to repair the ebike battery base on the discharge cable or replace a set of discharge cable line can be.
If the ebike battery discharge port and the base discharge cable are no voltage, or only 0.01-5V voltage, then we now disassemble the battery to check the ebike battery power switch. (If your ebike battery does not have a power switch please skip this step) we first determine whether the battery power switch is flexible, if not then the switch inside the spring is broken, just replace the power switch to completely repair the ebike battery.
Battery power switch all right? We check to see if there is wiring coming off at the solder power switch. If you peel off the insulating film and find that the wiring is off at the solder inside, just re-solder the wiring back with a soldering iron to repair your ebike battery.
Repair the power switch, the battery still does not work (or no battery power switch) then the battery is likely to be internal wiring damage or BMS is bad.
5) Check ebike battery BMS
BMS is the most easily damaged part of ebike battery, just replace the BMS and you can repair your ebike battery. So, how do we go about determining that there is a problem with the BMS?
We just need to measure the voltage at the charging port of the ebike battery. Please note that the positive and negative terminals of the charging port are very close to each other, which can easily cause a short circuit when measuring. We can observe the ebike battery charging port is that style, if it is far apart “-” and “+” mark, then we can directly measure. If the positive and negative poles are closer together, then we measure from inside the ebike battery. Strip the positive and negative cables to measure, after the measurement is completed, please wrap it with insulating tape.
When we measure the voltage at the charging port of the ebike battery we will be able to determine if the battery BMS is good or bad. If the voltage value is higher than the voltage of the battery discharge port you measured, then the BMS is bad. Just replace the BMS parts and you can repair your ebike battery.
If the voltage of the charging port and the voltage of the battery discharge port are the same, then the battery may be damaged internally. It’s not a simple matter of replacing parts to repair your ebike battery. You need a professional to disassemble the battery for repair. Because the battery is a dangerous product, the battery short circuit will cause a fire, not stopped in time will also evolve into an explosion. When you do not have professional electrical knowledge, we do not recommend that you continue to repair the ebike battery. Please leave it to the professionals to repair, if the battery has been used for a long time we recommend ordering a new battery is more cost-effective, after all, after a major repair of the battery already represents the end of life.
